What This Really Means

Fair Trade is a global movement made up of a diverse network of producers, companies, shoppers, advocates, and organizations putting people and planet first. When you see the Fair Trade Certified seal, is means that the ingredients in that product (like Shea Butter, Cocoa, Coconut Oil, or Coffee) were grown by farmers who were paid a fair, living wage. The beauty industry notoriously exploits supply chains in developing nationsโ€”particularly for ingredients like Shea Butter and Mica. Fair Trade certification ensures that these workers are not only paid fairly but also work in safe conditions, free from child labor or forced labor. A unique aspect of Fair Trade is the "Community Development Fund." For every Fair Trade Certified product sold, the producer earns a premium that is put into a communal fund. The workers then vote democratically on how to use that moneyโ€”whether it's building a school, a health clinic, or a well for clean water. By buying Fair Trade, you are directly investing in the autonomy and future of these communities.
